چکیده

Ant colony optimization algorithms are currently among the best performing algorithms for the quadratic assignment problem. These algorithms contain two main search procedures: solution construction by artificial ants and local search to improve the solutions constructed by the ants. Incremental local search is an approach that consists in reoptimizing partial solutions by a local search algorithm at regular intervals while constructing a complete solution. In this paper, we investigate the impact of adopting incremental local search in ant colony optimization to solve the quadratic assignment problem. Notwithstanding the promising results of incremental local search reported in the literature in a different context, the computational results of our new ACO algorithm are rather negative. We provide an empirical analysis that explains this failure.

An Ant Approach for Structured Quadratic Assignment Problems

The paper presents a new heuristic method for the quadratic assignment problem. This method is based on an artificial ant system, hybridized with a fast local search. The method is easy to implement and numerical results show that it is fast and efficient for structured problems.

Ant colony optimization for solving an industrial layout problem

This paper presents ACO_GLS, a hybrid ant colony optimization approach coupled with a guided local search, applied to a layout problem. ACO_GLS is applied to an industrial case, in a train maintenance facility of the French railway system (SNCF). Results show that an improvement of near 20% is achieved with respect to the actual layout. Since the problem is modeled as a quadratic assignment pro...

A Detailed Analysis of the Population-Based Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm for the TSP and the QAP

The population-based ant colony optimization algorithm (PACO) uses a very different pheromone update when compared to other ACO algorithms. In this work, we study P-ACO’s behavior for solving the traveling salesman problem (TSP) and the quadratic assignment problem (QAP). In particular, we investigate the impact of a local search on P-ACO parameters and performance. The results clearly show tha...

A Comparison of Memetic Algorithms, Tabu Search, and Ant Colonies for the Quadratic Assignment Problem

A memetic algorithm (MA), i.e. an evolutionary algorithm making use of local search, for the quadratic assignment problem is presented. A new recombination operator for realizing the approach is described, and the behavior of the MA is investigated on a set of problem instances containing between 25 and 100 facilities/locations. The results indicate that the proposed MA is able to produce high ...

Winner Determination in Combinatorial Auctions using Hybrid Ant Colony Optimization and Multi-Neighborhood Local Search

A combinatorial auction is an auction where the bidders have the choice to bid on bundles of items. The WDP in combinatorial auctions is the problem of finding winning bids that maximize the auctioneer’s revenue under the constraint that each item can be allocated to at most one bidder. The WDP is known as an NP-hard problem with practical applications like electronic commerce, production manag...
